Was interviewed about teer strategy by elsevier weekblad, a dutch weekly magazine
After the end of the Cold War, economic risk analysis seemed sufficient for making business decisions. Now that great power competition has returned with a vengeance it is essential to also take (geo-)political risk factors into account. Especially when it concerns cross-continental business between China and the EU, I argued.
Joris Teer (刘亚伯)’s profile was highlighted by Max de Haan for Elsevier Weekblad, a Dutch weekly magazine, to speak on this topic.

BUCKET LIST ALERT
I was announced on national radio as the founder of advisory firm for political risk analysis, Teer Strategy. Sinologist Ardi Bouwers and I spoke to BNR Nieuwsradio (‘Business News Radio’) about Beijing’s influence in Europe. Has the COVID-19 pandemic increased or listened this? What are the attributable risks for European companies and other organisations?
Manfred Weber - leader of the largest party in the European Parliament (EPP) - calls on a temporary ban on Chinese take-overs of European companies in need.
In the latter half of 2020, a major China-EU summit is planned. Under the leadership of EU-power house Germany, the European institutions and 27-EU member-states will engage the Chinese leadership to discuss a long-list of issues. Important point: Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI) through which the EU tries to restore balans in its economic relationship with China.
GAVE A workshop on political risk analysis FOR VU-HONOURS B.Sc. STUDENTS AT VU UNIVERSITY
How did Xi Jinping fare in 2019 (and has 2020 so far been better)?
This was the topic of an interactive guest lecture I was invited to give at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam to honours B.Sc. students following a course on strategy. We explored the tools that the field of political risk analysis (/political science) offers to analyze the effects that (geo-)political events have on governments and businesses.
Students concluded the class by moving on to 2020 and applying political risk tools themselves, as they debated the following proposition: 'The Chinese government's handling of the COVID-19 (corona-virus) outbreak strengthens Xi Jinping's and the Party's 'performance legitimacy.'' They successfully argued both sides of the issue.
Spoke to the royal Dutch geographical society about Wuhan, a Chinese metropolis
In February 2020, I was interviewed by the website geografie.nl, the online publication of the Royal Dutch Geographical Society, about Wuhan, the Chinese metropolis at the center of the coronavirus outbreak. We discussed Wuhan’s role in Central China’s development, its function as a hub for travellers and goods and why many international observers had never heard of the city before the epidemic.
Key quotation on why Wuhan was not well-known outside of China:
‘There are many Chinese cities we have never heard of. China, with its 1,4 billion inhabitants, knows at least 50 cities with a population twice the size of Amsterdam.’

addressed the closing ceremony of the Netherlands-asia honours summer school 2019
At the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs I had the pleasure to address representatives of universities, multinationals, the Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and students at the closing ceremony of the Netherlands-Asia Honours Summer School 2019, a programme I participated in in 2014, at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I concluded my remarks by stating that the Netherlands requires:
1. policy-makers and academics who understand China's political system and foreign policy
2. businesspeople who understand China's commercial culture and
3. engineers who grasp the vast technological developments taking place in China.
Due to their diverse academic backgrounds, the participants of the NAHSS are perfectly positioned to make the Netherlands ‘future proof’ by taking on all of these roles together.
